The new Formula One season is nearly upon us. It doesn’t seem that long ago that Max Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton on the final lap in Abu Dhabi to win his first F1 title. Verstappen and Hamilton will surely be the focus again this season, but both McLaren and Ferrari will be worth keeping an eye on as they look to close the gap.
A 23-race calendar begins in Bahrain on 18th March and also sees the return of hosts Canada, Japan and Australia who return to the schedule after missing out on the last two seasons due to Covid-19.
New Changes
Formula 1 cars will look completely different to older models as a new generation of machines is born. This is the culmination of more than four years work to try an improve the opportunities for overtaking following a major overhaul of aerodynamics.
The main changes are:
A ground-effect floor
The new cars have two long underfloor tunnels which create a 'ground effect’ providing the cars with additional suction underneath to pull it to the tarmac
A simplified front wing and a new rear wing
The new front wings on the 2022 cars have been designed to reduce airflow outwards. The curved rear wing is in stark contrast to the older boxed wings and will play an active role in making it easier for competitors to follow closely as its shaped to collect dirty air and channel it in front of the diffuser, which then pushes it up and over anyone behind who’s behind trying to overtake.
18-inch tyres
The new, larger tyres not only look great but also improve the handling of the cars.
